Traversing back to his home of Hueco Mundo, Animus received a surprise he did not expect from his superior; one of the Espada. Apparently, his superior was disappointed in the Gillian due to the fact he failed to abduct enough Shinigami for the Espada to prey upon. His sick and twisted thoughts of ravishing a female Shinigami could only be outdone by his anger at the poor Gillian. Punishment being delivered in the harshest of ways, being thrown into the Espada's Maggot feast. There could be nothing more dangerous to a hollow than to be thrown into the Espada's custom built torture environment.

The Maggot Feast, a large pit extending for miles where any hollow who failed to perform a task would be thrown into. In this place, only the strongest were allowed to survive as this was nothing more than a large arena where hollows killed each other for food and survival. If you did not kill, you would be the one to die and undoubtedly be eaten by the other hollow as food. Thrown into this battle for survival, Animus did whatever was necessary to survive whether it was killing others or eating them to survive. It was indeed unlike any hell he had ever faced before; it was much worse than he had ever imagined.

In this environment of constant fear of dying, almost all of the Hollows would begin to lose their sanity; reverting them back into nothing more than mindless eating machines. Even those who previously possessed a mind of their own, a strong one at that would be brought down to nothing more than a mindless creature bent on killing. Too many times Animus was on the verge of losing his sanity, slowly reverting back to the mindless creature he was in the past. He could feel all the personalities of the other hollow within him who wished to take control or those who wished to drag him down into purgatory. Not once could he let his guard down for if he did, he would likely be attacked or taken over by the sadistic minds within his mind.

The only reason Animus was able to maintain his sanity for so long is due to the broken memories of his past life as a human. Though he could not remember all of it, small fragments of his memory lead to the Way of the Samurai, Bushido. Something he had devoted his life to as a human but Animus did not know of this, he simply felt he should follow it. At the start of his survival, he killed whoever it was that attacked him, eating them to survive but now he killed only when necessary. Killing when the situation truly called for it, he feasted on other hollows only to sustain him enough to get through the day. Finally after having spent a substantial amount of time within the Maggot Feast, he was released by his Espada superior and reassigned on his previous mission. He would not fail in his mission again.
